Hullo! At my pre-op assessment for a hip-replacement operation a couple of days ago, I was told that my blood pressure was dangerously high, and that the operation scheduled for this week would have to be cancelled because the anaesthetist would consider me a bad risk. The nurse in charge told me that she was stopping the tests and that I should go immediately to my GP to discuss my situation. However, when I rang my surgery to convey this message, the receptionist said “Do not come. Do not come here. If you do, no one will see you”. This was at four o’clock on a weekday afternoon. When I added that I had been instructed at the hospital to tell my doctor that the matter was urgent, the receptionist repeated her script: “On no account come here”. This made me feel utterly alone, as I can neither reduce my blood pressure nor perform an orthopaedic operation by myself. To be treated this poorly by a practice I have been going to for nearly forty years was shocking for me, and disgraceful of them. Should receptionists be trained to do their job better? What does professional integrity mean to general practitioners today? Bemused and distressed of Oxford
